The Challenge: Deploying Hydrogen Infrastructure for Commercial Truck Fleets

Hydrogen fuel-cell trucks are gaining increasing attention as a viable zero-emission alternative for heavy-duty freight transportation. Unlike battery-electric vehicles, hydrogen trucks can be refueled quickly and maintain long driving ranges, making them well suited for logistics operations that require continuous uptime.

Despite the promise of hydrogen technology, one major obstacle remains: the limited availability of hydrogen fueling infrastructure.

Permanent hydrogen production and fueling facilities require significant capital investment, regulatory approvals, and extended construction timelines. For fleets interested in testing hydrogen technology or launching early pilot deployments, waiting for permanent infrastructure can delay progress by years.

HydroFleet’s FastTrack Mobile Refueling Station was engineered to solve this challenge by enabling fleets to begin operating hydrogen vehicles immediately without waiting for fixed infrastructure to be built.

The mobile fueling platform allows hydrogen to be delivered to a site through a transload system, boosted to high pressure, and dispensed directly to trucks. This flexible infrastructure model supports early fleet deployments, pilot programs, and logistics operations exploring hydrogen-powered transportation.

Industry Context: Fleet Decarbonization and Real-World Testing

The development of flexible fueling infrastructure solutions comes at a time when the transportation industry is actively testing and evaluating multiple pathways toward decarbonizing heavy-duty freight.

One of the most visible industry initiatives exploring these technologies is Run on Less – Messy Middle, organized by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE). This program brings together fleets operating a variety of energy platforms—including diesel, renewable diesel, natural gas, hydrogen, and electric Class 8 trucks—to test their performance in real-world conditions.

The 2025 Run on Less – Messy Middle event which took place September 8 through September 26, 2025, featured thirteen fleets operating across different energy systems. This initiative provided valuable insights into fuel efficiency, operational costs, vehicle performance, and infrastructure requirements for next-generation trucking technologies.

Large logistics organizations are actively participating in this exploration of sustainable freight solutions. Penske Logistics, for example, continues to play a significant role in advancing supply chain innovation through its expertise in transportation management, warehousing, and integrated logistics services.

As a full-service logistics provider operating across multiple regions, Penske Logistics helps companies build resilient and cost-effective supply chains by combining advanced operational expertise with technology-driven orchestration and fourth-party logistics (4PL) capabilities. Organizations like Penske are closely evaluating emerging technologies such as hydrogen-powered trucks to understand how they may fit into the future of freight transportation.

Programs like Run on Less help demonstrate the operational realities of these technologies while highlighting the importance of reliable fueling infrastructure solutions such as HydroFleet’s mobile hydrogen systems.

Visualization Solution by IMMIX Productions

To effectively communicate the operational benefits of the FastTrack system, HydroFleet partnered with IMMIX Productions to develop a detailed 3D animated visualization demonstrating the mobile refueling workflow.

The animation was designed to help stakeholders clearly understand:

  • How the mobile fueling station integrates into a logistics environment

  • How trucks enter, refuel, and exit the site

  • The compact footprint of the system

  • The speed and efficiency of hydrogen fueling operations

IMMIX developed a cinematic animation approximately one to one-and-a-half minutes in length, using multiple camera angles and animated sequences to present a comprehensive operational overview.

The visualization depicts a typical quarter-acre transload-style fueling site, illustrating traffic flow, equipment placement, and the full fueling process.

Animation Narrative and Operational Workflow

The animation guides viewers through a realistic hydrogen fueling scenario involving a Class 8 truck entering a HydroFleet fueling location.

The visual narrative follows the complete operational workflow of a hydrogen refueling cycle:

  • A hydrogen-powered truck enters the fueling site

  • The vehicle positions at the hydrogen dispensing unit

  • The fueling connection is established

  • Hydrogen fueling begins while a visual time indicator demonstrates the refueling duration

  • Once fueling is complete, the truck departs the site and navigates around other vehicles waiting to refuel

By presenting the fueling sequence in a clear, step-by-step format, the animation allows fleet operators and logistics planners to quickly understand how hydrogen fueling can be integrated into daily trucking operations.

Technical Visualization and Production Approach

IMMIX Productions utilized advanced 3D visualization techniques to ensure the animation accurately represented the equipment and environment used in a HydroFleet fueling deployment.

The production incorporated detailed models of critical hydrogen fueling infrastructure components, including:

  • Hydrogen dispensing systems

  • Mobile storage trailers and tank systems

  • Equipment skids and power systems

  • Fueling sockets, hose assemblies, and connectors

  • Hydrogen truck models and site infrastructure

Additional environmental modeling was developed to create a realistic operational setting, including terrain, barriers, fencing, foliage, and site lighting. Motion graphics overlays and informational callouts were integrated to highlight key system components and operational features.

Cinematic camera movements and carefully staged scene transitions guide viewers through the entire fueling process, transforming complex engineering systems into an intuitive visual narrative.

The project was completed within an accelerated production schedule of approximately two to three weeks, allowing HydroFleet to deploy the visualization quickly for marketing and stakeholder engagement.
